Are You Addicted to Stress?
Do you ever feel like you just can’t relax? You’re anxious, jumpy, nervous, or worrying about something all the time? Stress not only takes a toll on you emotionally, but physically as well. Over 43% of adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. It can cause problems such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety. So, why do we stress so much? After reading this article, “Are You Addicted to Stress” from www.under30ceo.com/ Northeast Consulting Group, Inc. decided to review it and share it with our people. These are some warning signs that you may be holding onto stress and brining it on in your life!
If you’re running your own business or in a position of leadership, other people will turn to you in times of need. They expect you to tell them what to do and lead them in the right direction. We do this because it feels good to help people right? But what about when you have tons of emails to answer, phone calls to make, meetings to attend, people to direct, and everyone seems to need something from you? The simple answer is: your vision narrows, your head starts to spin, your chest tightens.. STRESS happens.
If you are someone who likes to be in a leadership role or aspire to run your own business, then you are addicted to stress. When we hear the word “addicted” we automatically associate negativity with it, right? But can’t we be addicted to good things? Things like healthy eating, spending time with our family, exercise, etc.? So, if we can change our thought process on the word “addiction” and flip It positive, then why can’t we do the same with stress?
Well, mainly it is hard. When stress happens there are different ways to react. We can worry, suffer from anxiety, shut down, and feel as though there is no climbing out of this mess. OR we can take a deep breath and get busy!
The idea of a relaxed entrepreneur is way more attractive than the busy one right? Wrong. But, as a society, we struggle with giving ourselves the opportunity to be relaxed and still achieve success. We take things to extremes. If we “relax” we literally do nothing and if we “work hard” we run ourselves ragged and are a ball of stress. But, the solution to this is simple and can be summed up in one word, Commitment. Do exactly what you always do, but instead of getting stressed out, take a deep breath and commit to feeling relaxed. The only reason you stress is because you have conditioned yourself for stress. Throughout your entire career you have ensured that you met every situation of discomfort and uncertainty with stress and now have brainwashed yourself into associating this feeling with productivity and making a difference.
The only way to fix this is to commit to it and create new habits. The mind is a powerful thing, visualize success with a feeling of peace. Change your thinking on productivity to being relaxed and aware. This is a challenging task at first, but eventually you’ll train yourself to associate your work, productivity, and success with a relaxed state of mind.
